One of the remaining members of the nearly extinct Oblodra, Iraestra had been forced many years earlier to forsake her ancestral home in the Underdark.FOR A TIME her sole goal in life became revenge against those who orchestrated the fall of her house, namely House Baenre and the Spider Queen of Demons herself. Iraestra pursued the art of necromancy, driven feverishly by a desire to return all that had been lost to her. It was now Kiaransalee, the drowic lesser goddess of revenge and undeath, who answered her prayers instead of the treacherous Lolth.THOUGH SHE WOULD find few allies on the surface, her talents in forbidden magic quickly found her a place amongst Ketheric Thorm’s cult, along with another god: Myrkul.HER EXPERTISE & UNIQUE HISTORY with aberrations made her invaluable to the Chosen's plane. She aided them in their tadpole research & unlocking the secrets of ceremorphosis. As thanks, she was tadpoled to ensure that she remained loyal to the cause and did not become too ambitious.NOW SHE IS merely another obedient cultist with little desire left to pursue the vengeance that had once consumed her. CHARMING WHEN NEEDED, Iraestra is a prime example of what many would think of when picturing a drow: a little sullen, extremely unfriendly, and quick to draw her poisoned blade. This is only mildly offset by her dry sense of humor.FIERCELY INTELLIGENT, Iraestra spends much of her time preoccupied with her studies. Her library holds many of her prized possessions, though she is also not above petty vanities and has a jewelry collection sourced from the Underdark.IT CAN BE ASSUMED that her loyalty once earned would be near unbreakable, as she still swears fealty to a family that no longer exists except for in whispers and distant relations. Very few have ever had the chance to truly call her an ally, however. It should also be noted that her favor, once lost, is lost forevermore. Forgive and forget? Never. Balaena - her youngest sister, was the only sibling with whom she shared a true bond with.THEIR MOTHER, QUAVYLENE, was First Priestess of the house and firstborn daughter of the Matron Mother, K’yorl. A meek woman with an absent mind, she spoke as if still caught in the web of a dream. As she did not have the “strength” to endure her mother’s torments, K’yorl found her to be a disgrace to the family. She made it known that her heir would be chosen amongst her grandchildren instead.QUAVYLENE HAD AFFAIRS with several lovers, three of which remained her consorts for some time. Iraestra never knew which was her true father, though she was especially fond of one of them and considered him her father in every way that counts. Anything she knows of affection is from the few decades he raised her, a task that Quavylene neglected to perform.THE GREATEST LESSON Iraestra's father ever taught her was betrayal. He’d been found feeding Oblodran secrets to other noble houses. The execution had been public, graphic, and exceptionally long. Iraestra remembers her eldest sister holding her firmly up, insisting that she must watch. That she, too, should be punished.K'YORL PERFORMED THE DEED herself, stripping Iraestra’s father of every mental barrier and ruining his mind before finally making him slit his own throat. The knife he used was given to Iraestra as a “gift”, so that she would remember the cost of disloyalty.THIS WAS ALSO the first death the girl had ever witnessed. Iraestra stayed in that courtyard for hours after, staring at the horrid flower of his blood upon the stone. Small hand clutched tight against the dagger’s jeweled hilt, thinking only of joining him.DRIVEN MAD BY GRIEF, Iraestra's mother to kill her in turn after the spectacle. Their relationship never recovered. Iraestra pities her mother as much as she detests her.SHE WOULD KNOW the taste of familial betrayal once again many years later, when Balaena schemed to kill her and the babe in her belly. Iraestra had not expected the bite of the poisoned dagger to be held by Balaena’s hand, but she would not let the attempt on her life and her unborn heir go unanswered. She weeped bitter tears as she returned the favor, closing her little sister’s eyes forever.

THERE IS STRENGTH in heirs, and as the next in line to be Matron Mother, Iraestra was expected to produce them. She took a minor noble approved of by her grandmother for a consort, and with him had one child, a girl-heir named Jhulaer. There was no love lost between Iraestra and her consort, but they shared the desire to protect their daughter.JHULEAR COULD BE counted amongst the few people Iraestra has ever loved in her long life. Even so, Iraestra had never yearned for motherhood. She detested pregnancy and found herself awkward with the child. As many drow noblewomen do, she passed Jhulaer off to nursemaids and her father, only regaining interest in her when she was old enough to be taught.IRAESTA PERSONALLY OVERSAW Jhulaer’s training, wishing to shield her daughter from the worst of her great-grandmother’s torments. She was proud of her daughter’s quickly developing talents, though she sometimes saw the girl more as legacy, an extension of herself, than a child.A PART OF IRAESTRA was always terrified to be around the girl. After the birth she fell into a deep depression, unable to even bear the sight of the babe for a time. She grown up with the example of the abuse K'yorl visited upon her own daughters, and was almost slain by her own mother. What if this madness, this hatred, was hereditary? A curse she carried within?A QUESTION SHE would never truly know the answer to, as the girl perished along with most of the household.‡ lore / HOUSE OBLODRA
A COLD HOUSE, Oblodra was often considered a peculiar lot even by drow standards. They held to strange, ancient ways and guarded their secrets ferociously. Chief amongst those was the nature of their greatest power: psionics.GENERATIONS OF BREEDING for the trait have produced a particularly strong strain of the gift in their bloodline, as well as madness. Even worse, the family has always been haunted by whispers that they only bow publicly to Lolth, and in the shadows served abhorrent masters. It was even said that their daughters were taught by illithid allies and encouraged to have affairs with them.DESPITE THEIR SMALL NUMBERS, a combination of their political cunning, ruthlessness, and psionics led to them being the third most powerful house in the city for years.THE TALE OF their downfall begins with the Time of Troubles, when magic and the very gods themselves were unpredictable. Many nobles relied heavily on magic to maintain their positions, but Oblodra did not. The powers of the mind had nothing to do with the Weave or divine domains. K’yorl took full advantage of this, quickly taking revenge on old enemies before setting her sights more ambitiously on Menzoberranzan herself.THEY MIGHT HAVE SUCCEEDED, had Lolth herself not aided Baenre in striking them down. K’yorl was defeated and subjugated to torment for eternity in the Abyss, the compound of Oblodra swept into the hungering caverns below. Most of the house died in the assault, the scant few who survived now exiles to be hunted in the name of The Spider Queen.IRAESTRA CURSES EVERY DAY that she was not there. Instead, she had been deep in the Northdark on an expedition, chasing rumors of an aboleth. She wonders quite frequently if she could have prevented the tragedy had she been.

THOUGH IRAESTRA POSSESSED a gift for manipulating the Weave, K’yorl cared little for magic and thought their family’s psionics – ulsharyorn – of far greater import. Iraestra and her sisters were not sent to any of the traditional schools of Menzoberranzan. Instead they were trained in the arts, academics, traditions, and history, by slave-tutors.THE INSTRUCTION OF ulsharyorn was overseen by the most adept of the house's psionics. They held to brutal rituals in which survival was never guaranteed and promised madness should they fail. They first learned to dominate the minds of animals and small beasts, slaves, and eventually each other. Much of their studies revolved around aberrations, whom they considered to be superior lifeforms they strove to be like. Indeed, their obsession with them bordered on the religious.IRAESTRA QUICKLY PROVED to be the most adept of her sisters with matters of the mind. This did not escape her grandmother’s notice, who openly encouraged the rivalry for her favor between her two eldest granddaughters.THE EVENTUAL BATTLE with her sister was an affair they both barely survived, but Iraestra emerged the victor. Her sister was left permanently disfigured, one side of her face ruined.AN ESPECIALLY CRUEL test that an Oblodra psionic must face is the Hungering. For three days they are placed within reach of a starved illithid, kept captive in the bowels of the house’s compound until they are of use. Those that survive this hunting are considered worthy of the name Oblodra; those that do not merely feed the creature.‡ lore / RELIGION
AS HER MOTHER was First Priestess of the house, Iraestra and her siblings were notably devout to Lolth in their otherwise blasphemous sept.IRAESTAR WAS ESPECIALLY fervent in her devotion, a trait that her grandmother often scorned her for. When Lolth tested her to see if there were those still faithful in Oblodra, Iraestra carved out her right eye without question. Cruelly delighted by Iraestra’s sacrifice, Lolth granted her a new eye to show her favor. The sclera is blackened, the iris silver.LOLTH'S TREACHERY CUT her deeply.
